The Farmer's Wife

"While growing up in rural North Devon, most of the women surrounding me were married to farmers and so the most important women in my life are commonly characterised as farmer’s wives. I spoke to 4 women about this term and asked them for their definitions of a mother, a wife, and a farmer’s wife. Throughout each interview we spoke about themes of rural life such as isolation and the often painful process of succession. They discussed their lives, jobs and relationships with family and romantic partners. These women questioned the appropriateness of this term in the modern agricultural industry and community. Redefining themselves and reinventing what it means to be a farmer’s wife."
